Tito Dok tackles trans fat and health in new title ‘Ang Tatay Kong Mahilig Sa Instant’

Dr. Luis P. Gatmaitan, medical doctor and the Palanca Award-winning author who is popularly known as Tito Dok has released a latest title, “Ang Tatay Kong Mahilig Sa Instant” to tackle the relationship about diet and cardiovascular health

The new release tells a story about a father-daughter magician tandem who learned that there is nothing instantaneous about maintaining good health.

The story is narrated from the perspective of Cathy, an eight-year-old girl, who tells her magical adventures with her single father, Mang Manolo, a street food vendor and part-time children’s party magician.

Like his magic tricks, however, most of the food that Mang Manolo prepares and enjoys is instant: fried chicken, hotdogs, donuts, and instant coffee.

It asks: What happens when all of his instant food habits lead to his collapse in the middle of performing a magic trick?

As is a signature of any story by Dr. Gatmaitan, Ang Tatay Kong Mahilig Sa Instant explores health issues in an engaging, easy-to-understand, and entertaining manner.

The book focuses on the relationship of diet and cardiovascular health and to raise awareness about trans fat. Hence, it shares what trans fat is all about; where it can be found in our diet; and what are the health implications when we consume food with too much trans fat. Its illustration is done by educator Jhucel Del Rosario.

These questions were deliberated by Tito Dok in this story in a meaningful, accessible, and heartwarming way similar to his beloved children’s classic Sandosenang Sapatos.

Ang Tatay Kong Mahilig Sa Instant supports Trans Fat Free Philippines, a campaign on the regulation of trans fat in the Philippines. It is published or produced as part of a media fellowship of the Probe Media Foundation and ImagineLaw.

The story was publicly released through an online storytelling session entitled “Kuwento Ko, Akda Mo” held October 14, 2020 in collaboration with the National Library of the Philippines Book Cart Project, the storytelling initiative of the National Library of the Philippines
