CPU’s BAHÁNDÌAN digital repository is 1st in Visayas

CPU’s BAHÁNDÌAN digital repository is 1st in Visayas and the second institutional repository in Region 6. It was opened to serve as an official Institutional Repository of the Christian university in Jaro, Iloilo City.

The digital repository was launched February 15, 2021 at the Rose Memorial Auditorium.

BAHÁNDÌAN was established by Central Philippine University (CPU) to provide access to the research and publication output of the faculty, staff, students, and partner institutions who are conducting collaborative research with the prestigious university located in Jaro, Iloilo City.

“Bahándìan” is a Hiligaynon term which means “a container of treasure.”

Understanding CPU’s BAHÁNDÌAN digital repository

“Bahándìan” is a Hiligaynon term that describes “a container of treasure”. Hence, the name Bahándìan was selected for it represents a repository and it symbolize as a ‘treasure trove’ of valuable scholarly work of the institution.

The logo is a pearl encased in a shell with the Baybayin characters for Bahándìan. This is to symbolize the ‘treasure’ of knowledge held in the repository.

CPU’s BAHÁNDÌAN digital repository is a pioneering effort. It is the first academic digital research repository in the Visayas and the second institutional repository in Western Visayas (Region 6).

It primarily functions for the management, dissemination, and preservation of digital materials that represent the scholarly work of the Centralian academic community. Currently, two major journal publications of the university are in the collection, namely: Patubas and Scientia et Fides.

Scientia et Fides or Science and Faith in Latin language is the motto of CPU, a 116-year old university.

It will provide an open and online access to the University’s research and scholarship, to preserve these works for future generations, to promote new models of scholarly communication, and to help deepen community understanding of the value of higher education.

Journal publications, theses, and dissertations of students and faculty are also prioritized. To uphold copyright protection, only abstracts for research works produced from 1971 to 2021 are available while those produced from 1970 and backwards will have full text provided.

Other CPU-related research publications, such as; books, reports, and manuals will also be added to the digital collection.

Apparently, BAHÁNDÌAN is also a manifestation of CPU’s aim to promote a culture of research within the university as an academic community.

BAHÁNDÌAN is lodged and managed by CPU Henry Luce III Library

The BAHÁNDÌAN repository is managed by the Henry Luce III Library of CPU.

Currently, digitizing of the materials for Bahándìan are being undertaken by Luce III’s librarians and staff. By far, there are around 300 digitized documents in the repository and more are being processed daily for inclusion to the collection.

These developments implemented by CPU and the CPU Henry Luce III Library are aligned to pandemic response considering the growing need for access to online resources as a result of the shift to online learning. One of its successful effort is the creation of a virtual library assistant in June 2020 which is now popularly known as Bertha.

CPU obtained the technical assistance of librarians and experts from the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) Library and Data Bank in Tigbauan, Iloilo for the establishment of repository. The technical support included training of librarians and staff of the CPU Henry Luce III Library.
